Modernise Your Bathroom Without Retiling
Replacing bathroom tiles in most German or European period properties means chiselling, dust, a fortnight of trades and bills between €3,000 and €8,000. SPC wall panels offer an alternative that mounts directly over existing tiles — no drilling, no demolition, often done in a single weekend.
Why conventional retiling is so disruptive
Retiling means more than new tiles. The biggest line item is labour: chiselling off old tiles, repairing the plaster, spreading levelling compound, priming, setting new tiles, grouting, resealing. Even experienced tilers need three to five working days for a bathroom with 8–10 m² of wall surface — and the room is completely out of service throughout.
Add dust protection throughout the rest of the property, rubble disposal costs and the question of whether today's tile style will still look current in ten years. Tile aesthetics follow fashion cycles — the large-format stone imitations that felt modern in 2015 often look dated today.
SPC wall panels over tiles: how it works
SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) has a mineral core that expands thermally by almost nothing. This makes the panels not just 100 % waterproof but dimensionally stable enough to work on slightly uneven substrates — provided the deviation is within ±3 mm per metre. Existing tiles are ideal for this purpose: they are already flat, well-adhered and offer a clean mounting surface.
Installation uses either the Drop-Click system (tool-free, seamless, reversible) or full-surface bonding with a solvent-free dispersion adhesive. In wet zones we recommend bonding for all surfaces in direct contact with splash water — shower back wall, area behind the basin.
Step by step: what to do before the first panel
- Check tile adhesion. Tap existing tiles with a wooden dowel. Hollow spots (dull sound) must be secured or removed before installation — a loose substrate causes delamination later.
- Measure flatness. Place a 2-metre straightedge against the wall. Deviations over ±3 mm need levelling compound before the panels go up.
- Check door clearances. Panels are 4 mm thick; most doors can be rehung slightly higher. Plan this before ordering, especially if you are also renewing the floor.
- Remove old silicone. Strip all old sealant completely and replace with sanitary silicone matched to the panel material. This step is most often skipped — and causes the most complaints.
- Set the first row level. The first horizontal strip determines everything else. Check with a spirit level before fixing.
Which finishes work in a bathroom?
For wet rooms we recommend panels from the Travertino or marble-look ranges. Both are naturally matte — that is not a compromise but an advantage: matte surfaces show water spots and fingerprints far less than high-gloss finishes. Those who still prefer gloss should factor in a higher cleaning frequency.
Our best-selling bathroom panel is the Travertino Naturale decor — a warm, cream-toned natural-stone look with subtle texture that pairs with both dark wood and concrete elements. Free samples can be ordered directly from our shop to assess the decor under your own light.
Cost comparison: tiles versus SPC wall panels
| Item | Tiles (trades) | SPC panels (DIY) |
|---|---|---|
| Materials (8 m²) | €300–600 | €240–400 |
| Labour | €1,500–3,500 | €0 (self-install) |
| Old tile disposal | €200–400 | not applicable |
| Bathroom downtime | 3–7 days | 1 day |
| Total | €2,000–4,500 | €240–400 |
Figures are for an average bathroom with approx. 8 m² of wall surface. DIY assumes existing tiles are in good condition and no preparatory work is needed.
What happens to the old tiles?
Technically speaking: everything stays — and that is an advantage. The old tiles form a clean, load-bearing base. If you ever sell the property or want to remove the panels (the click system needs no tools), you will find an intact tile surface underneath. No substrate chaos, no surprises on removal.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bond SPC panels directly over tiles?
Yes — provided the tiles are firmly adhered (no hollow sound when tapped), the wall is flat (±3 mm per metre) and the adhesive is suitable for both materials. We recommend solvent-free acrylic-based dispersion adhesives.
Does this hold in a shower?
Yes. SPC is 100 % waterproof and does not shrink with moisture. What matters is the finish: all edges, joints and transitions must be sealed with sanitary silicone. This applies in particular to the floor-to-wall joint inside the shower.
How long do SPC wall panels last in a bathroom?
With professional installation and normal care, we offer up to 10 years warranty on printed panels. Actual service life is considerably longer — SPC is a polymer-mineral composite that does not rot, swell or corrode.
