SPC vs. PVC vs. Real Wood: Which Wall Panels Are Really Better?
If you're considering wall panels, within 20 minutes of research you encounter three materials: SPC, PVC, and real wood. Marketing tells you each is "the best material." The truth is more nuanced.
Quick overview: Which material for which purpose?
- Bathroom, kitchen, basement, sauna → SPC. The only material that durably resists real water.
- Living room, bedroom, hallway (dry areas, small budget) → PVC or MDF may suffice.
- Living room, bedroom, hallway (premium, no moisture) → Real wood for authenticity, SPC for ease of maintenance.
1. SPC (Stone Polymer Composite)
SPC panels consist of about 60-70% ground limestone combined with a thermoplastic polymer. Harder than PVC, more dimensionally stable than MDF, and 100% waterproof.
Waterproofness is the deciding factor. Unlike PVC (can swell with faulty click connections) or MDF (destroyed by moisture), SPC absorbs no moisture.
Dimensional stability: SPC only expands ~0.1 mm per meter with temperature. PVC expands five times that.
Downsides
Price higher than cheap PVC (€40-70 per m² vs €15-25). Weight ~9 kg per m², PVC 4-5 kg.
2. PVC
Plasticizers: many cheap PVC panels contain phthalates. Temperature sensitivity: expands in direct sun. Limited durability: panels look tired after 5-10 years.
3. Real wood
Authenticity is unmatched. Downsides: price (€80-180 + installation), moisture sensitivity (unsuitable for bathrooms), scratch sensitivity, care requirements.

For bathroom, kitchen, or basement the answer is always SPC. For dry living spaces with premium expectations: both SPC and real wood work — choose based on priorities (authenticity vs maintenance).
